A man who set fire to his clothes, then damaged a cell after being arrested.

David Blainey, 46, of Newman Road, North Shore, pleaded guilty to causing £90 of damage to cell 19 at Blackpool police station.

He was bailed and will be sentenced at a later date by District Judge Jeff Brailsford, sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

As a condition of his bail, he must not attend Blackpool Victoria Hospital unless taken there in a medical emergency by a police officer or ambulance staff.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Blainey set fire to his clothes in the resort’s Talbot Road, and was taken to hospital on May 16. After being discharged, he was put in a cell.

He ripped up the paper suit he had been given and damaged the cell walls.

Howard Green, defending, said Blainey had not been feeling well and he had behaved in a bizarre manner.
