Clarke was sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment by Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Clarke walked out of Blackpool’s Marks and Spencer without paying for steak valued at £80 on October 20 this year.

Six days previously Clarke had been sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months for four offences of stealing from a shop and an offence of handling stolen goods, the court was told.

Suzanne Mugford, defending, said Clarke was struggling for money after his benefits were stopped when he failed to give the authorities some information they asked for, before going to visit friends in London.
