A man accused of viciously attacking his girlfriend on several occasions has made his first appearance at court.

Pieter Schaap is alleged to have choked his partner so hard she could not breathe and he had to give her the kiss of life.

He is also accused of trying to force a chopstick into her ear, biting her and tearing out an earring during a series of alleged attacks between July and September this year.

Schaap, 45, of Balmoral Terrace, Fleetwood, faces two charges of assaulting his girlfriend causing her actually bodily harm and two charges of assault by battering her.

Defence lawyer, Gerry Coyle, entered not guilty pleas to the offences on his client’s behalf and asked for bail for him.

Blackpool magistrates said Schaap must remain in custody until a further hearing at Preston Crown Court this week.
