A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a 25-year-old man who has been left fighting for his life.

Thomas Field, 26, from Levenshulme, Manchester, has been charged with grievous bodily harm following the assault on Reece Roberts on Queen Street, Blackpool, in the early hours of Friday.

He appeared at Blackpool Magistrates Court yesterday, when his case was sent to Preston Crown Court.

He will stand at the higher court on October 24.

Mr Roberts had been drinking with friends on Thursday, and was punched outside Bar 19 at around 1.30am.

He was knocked unconscious and fell to the ground, banging his head on the pavement.

He has been left critically ill and is receiving lifesaving treatment at Royal Preston Hospital – a specialist centre for head injuries – to reduce a blood build-up on his brain.

His family is keeping a bedside vigil.

Mr Roberts has Sotos Syndrome, known as cerebral giantism, meaning he is taller and thinner than most people.

He is a student at Blackpool and The Fylde College.
