A driver is being held by police after trying to do a runner from hospital – minutes after the car he was travelling in was left upside down on its roof.

Police and fire crews were called to Park Road at 1.30am yesterday after reports four cars were involved in a crash – a silver Audi, silver Ford, blue Ford and a grey Nissan.

A 40-year-old man, who was in the silver Audi, was arrested at the scene for refusing to provide a breath test.

He complained of a shoulder injury and was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for treatment.

But then while in hospital he tried to escape and was re-arrested, police said. He is currently in custody.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “He is being held on attempting to escape from lawful custody and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.”
