A man has avoided being sent to prison after he grabbed his former girlfriend in a bearhug in St Annes telling her: “I love you, come with me.”

Mark Rowbotham refused to let his ex go until police carried out their threat and pepper-sprayed him.

Rowbotham, 24, of Norton Street, Morecambe, pleaded guilty to twice assaulting the woman and damaging her make-up bag and door frame.

He was sentenced to do 50 hours unpaid work for the community, put on 12 months supervision and ordered to pay £45 costs with £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

The first incident happened on December 19 when he damaged the make-up and door after his partner ended the relationship. The second incident happened two days later.

John Lee, defending, said his client had spent a day in custody and had pleaded guilty immediately. “He had had too much to drink. He wanted to get back with her, but she did not want to know,” he added.
