The street was cordoned off by police for several hours after the man was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital which specialises in treating head injuries.

Police said the man was bleeding from the head injury and they are working on the assumption he had been assaulted but were keeping an open mind. CID were due to look into the incident.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "We would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, who witnessed the incident, saw anything suspicious, or who has any information about the incident, to get in touch with the police as soon as possible."
