Man charged over baby injury wanted in Poland

A 32 year old man has been remanded in custody charged with causing a five- week-old baby traumatic head injuries.

Thomasz Raszkiewicz was arrested on Sunday following an incident at a house on Charles Street,Blackpool.

Blackpool Magistrates remanded him in custody after being told the by prosecutor Alison Quanbrough that there is an outstanding European Arrest Warrant for Raszkiewicz for an alleged offence of manslaughter in his home country of Poland – issued three years ago.

He is charged in the UK with maliciously wounding the baby with intent to cause the child grievous bodily harm. The child is currently being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool where he has shown an improvement and can now breathe without a ventilator.

There was no bail application for the defendant, who gave an address on Central Drive,Blackpool, via his lawyer Steven Townley.

Magistrates turned down an application from the Crown Prosecutor that the name of the child be kept secret following objections from the Press – but The Gazette has chosen not to name him.

Raszkiewicz will appear at Preston Crown Court on December 23.
