Janet Pearson, 59, allegedly took letters addressed to her neighbour at the flats where they lived in Clifton Drive South, St Annes, between November 2008 and September 2014.

Appearing at Blackpool Magistrates Court on crutches, Pearson sat behind her solicitor for the five-minute hearing during which she spoke only to confirm her name and address and to confirm she understood the charge against her.

Pearson, now of Douglas Drive, Freckleton, indicated a plea of not guilty to theft.

Malcolm Isherwood, prosecuting, told magistrates: “Both my friend I are agreed that looking at the crown’s case, this matter is not suitable for summary trial. It involves a number of items of mail which were intercepted on her part between November 1, 2008 and September 30, 2014.”

Magistrates adjourned the case for trial at Preston Crown Court.
