Large gatherings and anti-social behaviour were reported in Lytham yesterday evening (June 24), resulting in a dedicated policing operation being enforced.

Photos from the scene show groups of youths congregating on The Green, leaving litter and canisters of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, strewn across the field.

Fire crews were also reportedly called to the incident after partygoers allegedly lit a fire to keep warm, according to eyewitness reports.

In an attempt to make sure there is "no repeat" of events that happened last night there will be an increased police presence in the area.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "We understand that it has been a difficult time for everyone recently, particularly young people who won’t have been able to socialise with their friends in the environments they are used to, but the coronavirus regulations are still in place and they are there to protect people and save lives.

"The virus definitely hasn’t gone away and many areas of the North West continue to see high infection rates.

"We will continue to engage with people and will take a proportionate policing approach – but we will not hesitate to use powers available to us if we need to."

Parents have been asked to make their children aware that these events can be harmful for their health, and could also potentially result in them getting into trouble.

"Recent events in the region, which have been unregulated and unsafe, have seen serious issues reported and the safety of people at them simply can’t be guaranteed," the statement added.
