Alan Dawbarn, 70, Lorraine Dawbarn, 67, and Michelle Shahsavari, 39, benefits fraud

A family accused of staging a massive benefits fraud have made their first appearances at court.

Married pensioners Alan Dawbarn, 70, and his wife Lorraine, 67, and their 39-year-old daughter Michelle Shahsavari are accused of defrauding the Department of Work and Pensions out of £281,000 over a 12 year period.

The family live in adjoining flats on Raikes Parade Blackpool.

The town’smagistrates sent the trio for trial at Preston Crown Court where they will make their first appearance on September 5.

They were all granted bail.

Mr Dawbarn faces four allegations relating to Disabled Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Housing Benefit and Pension Credit.

His wife faces two allegations involving Disabled Living Allowance.

Their daughter faces four charges of making false claims for her parents in which she said their disabilities were more serious than in fact they were.

Adrian Hollamby, prosecuting, said: “The large amount of money involved means this should be heard at the higher court.

“The Crown allege all three were complicit in the this issue.”

Dean Lancaster, 30, damage and failing to answer bail

A prisoner carried out a dirty protest in his cell at a police station after claiming staff would not get him any toilet paper.

Dean Lancaster smeared excrement over the hatch and spyhole of the police cell when he was incarcerated after smashing a pub window.

Lancaster, a 30-year-old highways worker, of Shawhill Road, Chorley, pleaded guilty to two offences of causing damage and failing to answer bail.

He was fined £800 with £85 costs and ordered to pay £380 compensation plus £50 victims’ surcharge.

Leon Uzan, 28, assault

A former patient at The Harbour psychiatric hospital in Blackpool has made his first appearance at court accused of attacking a female nurse.

Leon Uzan, 28, of Wellington Street, Blackburn, is charged with assaulting the nurse causing her actual bodily harm at the hospital on May 12.

Uzan was bailed to September 5 for further inquiries into the case.

Dale Boyle, 26, assault

A Blackpool man charged with assault has been remanded in custody.

Dale Boyle, 26, of Coronation Street is accused of assaulting his former girlfriend on July 23.

His case was sent for trial at Preston Crown Court where he will appear September 5.

Axel Cartmell, 21, drink-driving

A man who had been drinking crashed after attending the Lytham Festival.

Axel Cartmell was driving his boss’ works van when he mounted the pavement and the top half of a tree crashed onto the vehicle during the accident.

Cartmell, 21, of Sefton Road, St Annes, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined £230 with £85 costs and ordered to pay £30 victims’ surcharge.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, said police were called to St Albans Road, St Annes, on July 20, in the early hours, where the Vauxhall van Cartmell had been driving had mounted the pavement.

At the police station a breath test showed 67 microgrammes of alcohol in his body – 35 is the limit.

Patrick Nelligan, defending, said his client, who had no previous convictions, had been to the Lytham Festival with a friend but had decided to drive home.

Ian Norton, 30, drink-driving

A drink-driving soldier was reported by McDonalds staff when he went through the drive-thru to get a burger. Ian Norton was said by the takeaway staff to be hardly able to speak when ordering and he also hit the kerb as he drove through.

Norton, a 30-year-old Corporal serving with the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and based at Weeton Army Barracks, pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

He was disqualified from driving for 22 months, fined £390 with £85 costs and ordered to pay £39 victims’ surcharge.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, said McDonalds staff at Lytham called police in the early hours of July 21 after they became suspicious Norton had been drinking before he drove his Vauxhall Astra through the drive-in.A breath test showed 84 microgrammes of alcohol in his body - 35 is the limit. Martin Hillson, defending, said Norton, who had been in the Army for 10 years, could face demotion.
