One neighbour said she heard 'shouting and arguing' at around 12.30am on the morning of the incident.

She said: "They were slamming doors and swearing."

It then 'went quiet' before the row continued outside, she added.

Some time later, a man was seen lying on the ground in the back garden of the house, she said, while another urged him to 'wake up'.

Police were called out at around 2.15am, the force said, while paramedics were called out at 2.19am.

One witness said she later saw police officers and forensic experts going in and out the house, with a tent put up in the back yard.

Officers were stationed at the front and back of the mid-terrace home yesterday, while detectives spoke with neighbours.

A resident on the street, which runs off Ashton Road and parallel to Park Road, said he has 'shocked' at the news, which came just weeks after he moved in with his family.

There was no tent in the back yard yesterday afternoon, although wet clothes, an old exercise bike, and scattered boxes could be seen.

The back door's window pane had been smashed, repaired with black tape, while at the front of the house, net curtains hung in each of the windows.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed Mr Crawley's death was being treated as suspicious.

"Officers attended an address in Clinton Avenue where a 63-year-old man was found with head injuries," he said.

"He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."
