The perils of relying on a home breathalyser testing kit were highlighted to a court after a driver was caught over the limit.
On February 6 about 2am, police stopped Igors Ornovskis’ in Mellor Road, Kirkham. A breath test showed 46 microgrammes of alcohol in his body – 35 is the limit.
Suzanne Mugford, defending, told magistrates: “About two years ago he bought a breathalyser. He says he tested himself on that machine before taking the decision to drive.”
Ornovskis, a 31-year-old shift-worker, of Hornbeam Close, Wesham, who had the court proceedings relayed to him in Russian, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was banned from the road for three years, fined £275 with £85 costs and ordered to pay £27 victims’ surcharge by magistrates.
