It started in Langdale Road, Mereside, when police tried to pull a black Volkswagen Golf over shortly before 9.55pm yesterday, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said.

The hatchback sped away, heading towards Oxford Road and Vicarage Road before looping back towards Langdale Road a few minutes later, she said.

The short chase ended at around 9.57pm when the Golf smashed into a parked car, setting its air bags off and damaging both vehicles, she added.

The car’s driver got out and ran off on foot, with officers hot on his heels.

A 23-year-old man from Blackpool was arrested nearby, and was held on suspicion of dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified.

He is still in custody this morning, and he is due to be questioned.

Nobody was hurt in the crash, and no other vehicles were damaged, the spokeswoman added.

However, the road was blocked until the Golf was recovered by a Macadams truck.

Bus services three, hour, and six were diverted down Kentmere Drive, Preston New Road, and Clifton Road in both directions, a spokesman for Blackpool Transport said.
