Duncan Bain stopped taking the drug, but returned to it after becoming depressed when he was made redundant from a warehouse job.

Bain, 46, of Seabourne Avenue, South Shore, pleaded guilty to four offences of theft and was bailed for pre-sentence reports by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said the first incident happened on January 21.

Bain stole steaks valued at £21 from Cost Cutters.

On January 31 he took four cans of deodorant from the Blackpool branch of Boots.

On February 4 and 5 he stole £76 of shaving gear and £26 worth of similar gear.

He told police he intended selling the goods to buy drugs.

Jo Gregory, defending, said Bain had been a firefighter, but he broke his back in an accident at work.

He became addicted to painkillers given to him by his GP, but when the doctor would no longer prescribe them, he turned to street heroin.

Bain kept his use of heroin low-level and eventually stopped taking it, but he
returned to it after being made redundant.
