Football shirts banned at court by magistrate

As football fever sweeps the nation a magistrate has banned the wearing of football shirts at court.

Terence Cryer, presiding magistrate at Blackpool Magistrates' Court, today warned a defendant not to appear again at court wearing a football shirt.

Garath Snow-McArthur, aged 37, of Dickson Road, Blackpool, was wearing a red Liverpool football shirt, when he admitted stealing £474 worth of food from a supermarket and was sentenced to a 12 months conditional discharge.

After the case ended Mr Cryer told him: "If you come to court again do not come in a football shirt. It is not right."

Mr Cryer indicated the coat of arms over the bench telling Snow-McArthur that the insignia represented the Queen.

He asked: "Would you appear before the Queen dressed like that" to which Snow-McArthur replied "yes I would."
