Christmas Day ended in disaster for a driver who crashed his car and was then arrested for drink-driving by police.

Philip White was found sat cross-legged in the middle of the road at Pilling with his head in his hands beside his wrecked Mondeo.

White, 26, of Clarence Avenue, Knott End, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was banned from the road for 20 months and fined £250 with £85 costs by Blackpool magistrates.

Jane Yates, prosecuting, said a taxi driver heading home on Head Dyke Way was forced to stop because a badly damaged Mondeo which had collided with a hedge was blocking the road on December 25 at 4.17am. A breath test showed 68 micrograms of alcohol in his body.

David Charnley, defending, said his client, had gone into Lancaster for a drink with friends. He intended staying at a friend’s home but the friend did not turn up.

Mr Charnley added: “He stopped drinking and later felt he was okay to drive. He is a decent young man who made a mistake.”
