Mark Bird struck as the toddler sat with his pregnant mother and his father on a bench outside a doughnut store on Blackpool Promenade.

Bird then attempted to attack passersby at random forcing some to jump into the road to get out of his way.

Bird, unemployed, 35, of South Promenade, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening manner.

He was fined £120 and ordered to pay the toddler’s family £100 compensation by Blackpool magistrates.

Presiding magistrate, Brian Nicholson, told him: “Whatever your level of intoxication, this was a disgusting and disgraceful act and I would like you to think how you would feel if someone did that to you.”

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, said Bird spat at a two-year-old boy on April 24 about 5pm.

His 32-weeks pregnant mum wiped him down and she later told police the incident caused her considerable stress.

Bird went off along the Prom shouting and swearing and trying to attack people.

A man had to pull his girlfriend into the road so they could escape Bird and an Asian family with a pram had to jump out of his way.

Bird told magistrates he was under a lot of stress, had been drinking heavily that day and did not know what he was doing.

He added that if his mouth had been bloody someone must have hit him. He said he was now getting help from alcohol rehabilitation specialists.
