Dog handler's 'most rewarding duty' at hospice

A police dog handler has described a visit to Blackpool's Trinity Hospice as one of the most rewarding missions of his career.

PC Pete Crowther from the Lancashire Police Dog Unit took Daisy and Zeus on a special afternoon visit to day care patients.

The two dogs were put through their paces, showing off some of the skills which have made them a vital part of the police’s crime fighting arsenal.

And for PC Crowther, the day was one of the most memorable he has had on duty.

He said: “The hospice invites all sorts of people in to meet the patients.

“The hospice doesn’t just care for those who are in for long term care.

“There are lots of day visitors as well.

“It was fantastic to take the dogs in and show them what they can do.

“The response was fantastic, it was really rewarding.

“It’s probably one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my time with the police.

“Zeus has to be kept under contol but the patients and staff were able to meet Daisy.

“The dogs were fantastic and I’m sure they enjoyed the attention.”

PC Crowther, who has also visited schools with his canine colleagues, is already planning a return trip to the Bispham hospice, which is based in Low Moor Road.
