Andrew Walsh started drinking after his grandfather died, and spent most of the festive period alone.

He was given a 12- month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £15 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Andrea Fawcett, prosecuting, said Walsh contacted police saying he was going to throw himself off North Pier on January 1.

Officers found Walsh drunk in the middle of the road. He was impossible to remonstrate with.

Kathryn Jamieson-Sinclair, defending, told magistrates: “December was a very difficult period for him. It seems to have been a cry for help. He is now in a much better position.”
