Smoke from the blaze, at the derelict New Sunset Hotel in Albert Road, spread to a nearby property where the youngster was staying, the fire service said.

The child was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, a spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed.

He was unable to give their age or gender.

The emergency services were called to the large four-storey hotel at around 1.40am, and it was initially feared somebody may still be inside.

Six firefighters from Blackpool and South Shore stations, wearing breathing masks, searched the property before tackling the flames, spokesman John Taylor said.

Initial investigations revealed the fire was started deliberately on the ground floor of the hotel, which was been severely damaged.

Nobody was found inside, and nobody was seriously injured, Mr Taylor added.
