While the circumstances of the incident which claimed the life of 19-year-old Gabriel Isaac Fields are still being investigated, Wesham resident Clare Stephenson says Saturday night’s incident on Station Road again highlights concerns over the speed of traffic in both directions between Kirkham through Wesham and out to the A585 bypass.

““I was so deeply sorry to hear about the accident which has taken the life of a local resident, Gabriel Fields," said Claire. who lives off Weeton Road.

"Something urgently needs doing about the speed of traffic on Station Road and the roads out to the bypass,”

“I’ve been calling for some time for some kind of monitoring of enforcement of traffic on what is a 20 mph stretch,

“We never see speed enforcement vans – a flashing speed sign to remind drivers of the limit or anything would help.

“The situation has continued to deteriorate, with regular near-misses between vehicles, humans and pets.

“Urgent action must now be taken to mitigate any further loss of life and some form of speed enforcement be implemented.

“Cost should not be a barrier to safety in our communities nor should our residents feel anxiety and risk by simply walking on the streets where we live.”

County Coun Liz Oades, who represents the area at County Hall, said: “I must stress we still don’t know the exact circumstances of Saturday’s very sad event but I agree that speed enforcement is very important and I have been pressing for it.”

Anyone who can help with information about Saturday;'s crash, which happened around 10.30pm should call police on 101 quoting log number 1535 of July 4.
