A member of the public came to a police officer’s aid when she grappled with a builder after he had assaulted his girlfriend.

John Wignall had kicked a bottle of wine which smashed sending a fragment of glass flying which cut his partner’s face.

Wignall, 49, of Princess Avenue, Poulton, pleaded guilty to assault and resisting police.

He was sentenced to two years supervision and ordered to pay £100 costs plus £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Wignall and his partner had an argument on July 18.

He accused her of insulting his family and kicked a bottle of wine on the floor.

Allan Cobain, defending, said the couple had both been drinking before the row. They had now got back together.
