A man accused of driving at speeds of around 100mph while pursued by police patrols and the force helicopter, has made his first appearance at Blackpool Magistrates Court.

Carl Hartley is said to have missed colliding with other traffic, hit a roundabout and gone through a red light as he led officers on a high speed chase around Blackpool and Wrea Green.

Hartley, a 24-year-old bricklayer of Thorntrees Avenue, Lea, is charged with driving dangerously on Progress Way and the A583 on August 31. Hartley is also accused of driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop for a police officer.

Defence lawyer, Steven Townley, said his client would not indicate pleas to the offences at this stage. He was bailed to appear at Preston Crown Court in December 24.
