Supt Kitchen handed Blackpool police service over to his successor, Robert Robertshaw, on February 5.

He said: "An emotional day as I hand over Blackpool police into the safe hands of Supt Robertshaw, and humbled at the amazing messages, cards and chats this week. The absolute best time of my career, amazing staff and a local partnership in amazing shape. Sad to go but exciting challenges ahead."

He will now take up a role at the National Police Co-ordination Centre, responsible for organising the deployment of police officers across the UK during large scale events and operations.

Chief Superintendent Sam Mackenzie, of Lancashire police, said: “Damian has been a real asset to Blackpool and West Division. He’s been a fantastic leader for our staff, and has also been active and positive in working with all of our key partners.

“We will miss his leadership and energy. His replacement Richard Robertshaw is a hugely experienced Superintendent and brings a vast level of policing and partnership experience. Richard also worked in Blackpool earlier in his service so has a strong connection to the division.”

Supt Robertshaw, who has 25 years experience as a police officer, said: "Policing Blackpool is unique due to it being a busy tourist resort which attracts lots of visitors. Alongside areas of deprivation, this brings challenges – but we have really dedicated officers and staff here at Blackpool who are committed to making our communities as safe as possible and providing support to the most vulnerable.

"I’m proud to be able to work alongside these officers – as well as our partner agencies – and I am really looking forward to getting stuck into this role to expand on the fantastic work that is already in place."
