A Blackpool Victoria Hospital governor has urged NHS staff not to wear their ID badges outside of work.

Steven Gratrix, who represents Fylde patients, voiced his concern after media reports some medics were being mugged at knifepoint for the badges, which are feared to be desirable by crooks desperate to be allowed into supermarkets during NHS staff-only slots.

He said: “It’s been drawn to my attention that the offer of ‘golden hours’ by major outlets has created a despicable aspect, that being the new ‘value’ of NHS IDs.

“It is reported that NHS staff are being mugged at knifepoint for their ID.

“Staff should not be going to or from work in uniform at present, so please keep your ID safe, it is also an access key.”

A leaked email from the Healthy London Partnership, which was seen by a national newspaper, warned workers to be “very vigilant” on their way to work.

It said: "Dear all, we are regrettably hearing reports from the Met that some NHS staff are being mugged for their passes and lanyards.

"Please be very vigilant when using your passes and showing your lanyards."

There have been no confirmed reports of such muggings in Lancashire.
