Damien Watson, 32, assault

A sleep deprived father flew into a rage when his girlfriend took a joke the wrong way.

Damien Watson, whose one-year-old baby daughter had frequently been waking up in the early hours, attacked his partner.

He spat in her face, grabbed her by the throat and pushed her onto a sofa, causing her to suffer red marks to her throat and face, a hurt hand and a cut to the side of her face.

Watson, a 32-year-old carpet fitter, formerly of Bedford Road, North Shore, now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault.

He was sentenced to a 12 months community order with up to 20 days rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service, fined £25 with £85 costs and ordered to pay his girlfriend £100 compensation.

Sarah Perkins, prosecuting, said Watson’s partner said he accused her of cheating on him with another man on December 12 at 8.20pm.

She told him there was no other man, asked him to leave and he attacked her causing their daughter to cry.

In a report to the court, probation officer Eleanor Cordwell, told magistrates Watson said the couple’s sleep patterns had been disrupted as their daughter was often awake in the early hours.

Watson said the night of the offence his partner’s phone rang and as a joke he said: “Was that your boyfriend?”

He said they often bantered and joked with each other but this night she did not find it funny.

He did not recall grabbing her throat or spitting at her.

Robert Castle, defending, said his client had been frank in admitting what he had done and was very remorseful.

The couple had planned to get married in March and intended to get back together again when the court case ended.

Paul Cuthbert, 46, failing to comply with post prision sentence supervision

A man has been jailed again for missing appointments with his probation officer.

Paul Cuthbert, 46, of Knowle Road, North Shore, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with post prison sentence supervision when he appeared at court via the videolink.

He was sentenced to 14 days in jail. Cuthbert was reprimanded by presiding magistrate, Collette Woodhouse, after she asked the defendant if he could hear what she was saying.

He replied: “Yes I can, love.” She then told him: “Don’t call me love.”

Gillian O’Flaherty, prosecuting for the probation service, said Cuthbert had been released from prison on November 21 last year after being recalled to jail for previously failing to keep appointments with his probation officer.

After his release he was offered seven appointments with his probation officer but kept only three of them.

Trevor Colbourne, defending, said his client accept he did not turn up to appointments when he should have.

Shaun Neil, 38, assault

A man said to have assaulted his mother and his former girlfriend has appeared at court over the videolink.

Shaun Neil, 38, of Duddon Avenue, Fleetwood, pleaded not guilty to assaulting his mum and his ex-girlfriend.

He is also accused of possessing a carving knife in public.

The offences are alleged to have taken place on January 9.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, opposed bail for Neil.

Neil was refused bail and remanded in custody towards his trial on March 8.

Wayne Midgley, 42, sending indecent or offensive messages for the purpose of causing distress and anxiety

A man accused of sending nasty messages to a woman has made his first appearance at court.

Wayne Midgley, 42, of Park Road, St Annes, faces two offences of sending indecent or offensive messages for the purpose of causing distress and anxiety.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, asked for an adjournment of the case for further enquiries.

Midgley was bailed and must live at his given address and not contact the complainant or go to Mitcham or the Borough of Merton, both in Surrey, as conditions of his bail.

Michael Whitney, 30, illegal use of bank cards

A man has made his first appearance at court accused of using a former girlfriend’s contactless bank cards.

Michael Whitney, 30, of Egremont Avenue, Cleveleys, is charged with using a woman’s bank cards and attempting to use the bank cards.

The offences are alleged to have taken place on December 5 in Preston.

Whitney was bailed to March 21 for trial at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court.

Damian Davis, 24, breach of restraining order

A man broke a court order because his pregnant girlfriend threatened to commit suicide a court was told.

Damien Davis had been ordered not to contact his partner but he went round to her home to see if she was okay.

Davis, 24, of Park Road, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order.

He was jailed for six weeks and ordered to pay £115 victims’ surcharge.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, said Davis was put on a two year restraining order which banned him from contacting his partner or entering her home in Blackpool for three offences of assaulting her.

In addition he was sentenced to eight weeks jail suspended for two years for the assaults.

On January 23 a friend at Davis’s girlfriend’s home saw the defendant come into the address and speak to his girlfriend.

Robert Castle, defending, told magistrates: “He was called by her and asked to go to her address because she said she was going to kill herself and the baby.”

“What would anyone do - he went round immediately, spoke to her and left. He had been told she was suicidal. She was clearly unwell.

“Her call was logged on his phone which was seized by the police.”
