A woman turned into a benefits cheat because she was terrified she would lose her home.

Jennifer O’Brien illegally claimed more than £3,000 by pretending her daughter still lived with her.

O’Brien, 21, of Montrose Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to making a false statement and two offences of failing to notify a change in circumstances.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said O’Brien illegally claimed £3,674 in income support and housing benefit between August last year and May this year when she failed to tell the authorities her daughter no longer lived with her.

Daniel Harman, defending, said: “She was terrified of losing her home.”

O’Brien was given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £15 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.
