A KIRKHAM mother has been ordered to do 40 hours of unpaid work after being found guilty of wrongly claiming benefits totalling £4,560.
Blackpool magistrates heard Ruth Wright, 25, of The Close, Kirkham, had claimed Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Job Seeker’s Allowance on the basis her and her partner were unemployed.
Investigations showed that her partner had a job and that, as a result, her benefits claim between July and December 2011 was bogus.
Coun Karen Buckley, Fylde Council cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “This was a ridiculous claim that was easily uncovered by our investigators.
“Investigations simply match information from a variety of public agencies to see if someone who claims to have no income is telling the truth.
“This lady has shamed herself quite needlessly and I hope anyone else tempted to cheat the system will think twice. Benefits will always be paid for people who need them: they are not there to be cheated.”
The court also ordered Wright to repay the benefits.
