The Audi RS3 driver was pulled over yesterday evening, close to the turn-off for Kirkham, after he failed to spot the marked police car travelling behind him, a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.

The motorist has now been reported and, if found guilty, could be ordered off the road, and given penalty points and a fine after police say they clocked him at 140mph.

The speed limit is 70mph.

Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) guidelines says drivers should be fined or sent on a speed awareness course if they are caught going at between 71-79mph on the motorway.

But those travelling faster should be summonsed to court to have their case heard by a magistrate.
