The hunt is on for an arsonist believed to have dropped a burning rag through a kitchen window this morning.
Crew manager at Forest Gate Fire Station, Darren Gregson, said: “A man was walking back from the shops when he saw flames in a lean-to kitchen at the back.
“On arrival, we found the house was secure so we gained access and used a hose reel to extinguish a small fire on the window ledge.”
Crime scene investigators have been called out, and it is hoped CCTV footage from a nearby property could lead to the firebug’s arrest.
The house, thought to have been lived in until recently, suffered severe smoke damage to the kitchen and some smoke damage to the rest of the ground floor, Mr Gregson added.
“We do work with the police and these incidents do get investigated. Although nobody was hurt, this is still serious,” he said.
