A man who came to the seaside for a day out with his girlfriend was arrested after behaving badly in Blackpool.

Owen Maughan got extremely drunk and knocked over bicycles outside a shop before squaring up to the shop owner.

Maughan, 29, of Preston Street, Darwen, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly. He was fined £35 with £20 victims’ surcharge but could not pay immediately so Blackpool magistrates said he must remain in the court cells until lunchtime instead. Presiding magistrate, James Hanna, told him: “Doing what you are doing, you are going to kill yourself or injured someone else.”

Alison Quanbrough, prosecuting, said police got a report a man and woman were throwing bottles on Lytham Road on September 11 at 1.37pm. Officers found Maughan staggering.

Later he pushed over four bicycles outside a shop and when the shopkeeper ran out, advanced on him in a menacing manner. Daniel Harman, defending, said: “It was an unsavoury incident. His life has been ravaged by chronic alcoholism.”
