A man has today been arrested after former Blackpool FC player Ian Evatt was allegedly punched, kicked and spat on during a pitch invasion by Preston North End fans.
The defender, who now plays for Chesterfield, spoke to police after his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of North End on Sunday.
Following the final whistle, PNE fans celebrated a 4-0 win on aggregate that secured their place in the League One play-off final by invading the pitch at Deepdale.
Lancashire Police launched an investigation yesterday after receiving a complaint over the alleged attack on Evatt, who made more than 200 appearances for Pool between 2006 and 2013.
Officers arrested a 20-year-old man from Preston this morning on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “Police are continuing to investigate the alleged assault on Chesterfield player Ian Evatt, which followed an otherwise largely peaceful incursion onto the pitch at the end of the Preston v Chesterfield match at Deepdale on Sunday, May 10. The player was thankfully not seriously hurt.
