Firefighters say they are searching the scene of a major house fire this morning to establish whether or not anybody was trapped in the property at the time of the blaze.

Four engines and an Aerial Ladder Platform were called out to a "persons reported" fire at the property, which is divided into two flats, on Garstang Road at around 3am on Tuesday, May 15.

Firefighters say the sky was "glowing orange" and flames were shooting out of the roof when they arrived at the scene.

People were safely evacuated from surrounding properties but fire services say that because the building is now unsafe fire crews have been unable to enter one of the properties to confirm whether or not a flat was empty.

Watch Manager Andrew Jones said: "There was a significant house fire overnight which is still ongoing.

"Houses on either side of the property were evacuated.

"The fire was extinguished but hot spots remain so crews are now damping down.

"The house has been severely damaged and left structurally unsound by fire and the first floor and roof were completely destroyed."

Neighbour Matthew Jackson described how engines arrived at the scene of the emergency in minutes after they were alerted by a neightbour.

He said: "I was woken up by the fire brigade banging on my door to evacuate.

"My neighbour called them out as she was woken by the fire. We waited not even five minutes for the first engine to turn up."

Investigations into the cause are ongoing, say fire services.
