Creating a trail of treasures is just child's play

Pupils from six Blackpool primary schools have created a geocache trail of their favourite resort places

The brainchild of Boundary Primary School Year 5 teacher Sarah Akin, the Kids Meet sessions saw children working with each other to decide on their favourite places across the resort

Geocaching has been described as the ‘world’s biggest treasure hunt’ and was launched in 2000, and involves leaving markers , usually with a token, which can be found via the internet.

Pupils from Boundary, Baines Endowed, Moor Park, Roseacre, St Kentigerns and Hawes Side primary schools secured funding from Blackpool Council and are working with a Geography undergraduate student working to make the trail ready for summer.

Teacher Sarah Akin said: “The main idea of the presentation was for the children to pick our their favourite Blackpool attractions to create the trail. They all pitched their ideas and picked their favourites.

“ The main thing is the children worked really hard on their presentation skills, collaborative skills and working together.”

Pupil Harry Morrison, nine, from Blackpool, said: “I enjoyed the entire project, especially preparing and delivering a presentation and working collaboratively alongside other schools.

“I’m really proud that my school hosted the event and we able to show off our school to other children.”

Once the trail is set in place, each school’s team of six pupils will head to the sites equipped with Geocaching apps to help them uncover the treasures.

Miss Akin added: “The children will inherit Blackpool as a town and we wanted them to take the initiative to decide exactly what sights were important to them and should be used for the project. The behaviour of all pupils was impeccable and all schools involved loved the Kids Meet and are looking forward to their first Geocaching experience.”
