A BLACKPOOL mum has been jailed for attacking her own baby son, leaving him severely brain damaged.
Kayleigh Searle, 19, of Troutbeck Crescent, Mereside, was sentenced to seven years for child cruelty against baby Thomas Searle and three years for grievous bodily harm to run concurrently, as well as one year for perverting the course of justice giving her a sentence totalling eight years in prison after earlier pleading guilty to the offences.
Her boyfriend at the time, Reece Bourne, also 19, of Harbour Lane, Warton, was sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to child cruelty.
Det Insp Nina Foley from the Force Major investigation Team said: “No prison sentence will adequately reflect the actions of Searle towards her son or help him recover from the massive brain trauma he sustained.
“Unfortunately his injuries were such that he has been left with severe disabilities.
“Kayleigh Searle’s actions were wicked and cruel and she showed no remorse for her actions.
“I hope the time she is in prison is spent reflecting on her behaviour towards her son and how she has denied him a healthy, pain-free life.
“Bourne was aware of Kayleigh’s earlier actions towards her baby son. By pleading guilty he has admitted that by not taking any action sooner against her led to the assault in February when Searle inflicted the catastrophic head injuries on her baby.
“Cases like this are always very difficult to investigate, especially when babies have been subjected to such violence, I would like to express my thanks to the medical professionals who undoubtedly saved the little boy’s life and assisted the police inquiry from the outset and praise the officers involved in the investigation whose professionalism and commitment in this case has led to a successful prosecution.”
