A MAN and woman had a lucky escape when a car port in their garden went up in flames today.
The couple were woken by a taxi driver who spotted fire in their back garden at around 5.40am.
Firefighters were called in as the fire began to spread from the car port towards the house on Fernhurst Avenue, South Shore.
Watch manager Steve Palmer told The Gazette: “When we arrived the fire was well alight, luckily the taxi driver had alerted the residents inside the property as the flames had just started to break into the house through two windows and a door.
“Our main priority was to stop the fire damaging the home which we managed, but the car port was severely affected.
“The property is a semi-detached building but there was no fear the blaze would spread to the neighbouring building and there was no vehicle in the car port.”
The cause of the fire is unknown but officers believe it started in a wheelie bin and are not treating the incident as suspicious.
