County council worker accused of serial sex attacks

A Lancashire County Council worker accused of a carrying out a series of sex attacks on a young girl has made his first appearance at court.

Gary Cookson, a 36-year-old highways inspector, of Grasmere Road, Knott End, faces three charges of serious sexual assault on the girl when she was aged between seven and 10. He is also accused of assaulting the girl.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at Knott End between May 11 2011 and July 5 this year.

Prosecutor, Jim Mowbray, asked for the case to be heard at crown court. Defence lawyer, Hugh Pond, said his client would not indicate any pleas to the offences at this stage.

Cookson was.bailed to appear at Preston Crown Court on July 30 by by District Judge Pamela Baldwin sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

He must live at his given address and not enter Lytham St Anne’s or Hambleton and not have unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 16 as conditions of his bail.
