Councillors set to get a rise in allowances

Councillors on Lancashire County Council will receive a basic allowance of more than £10,300 over the next 12 months, if proposals are approved later this week.

A full council meeting on Thursday will discuss proposals to give councillors a £10,362 basic allowance for the period between April 1 and March 31 next year.

That is an increase on the current £10,139.

The council will also pay a total of £352,052 in special responsibility allowances to senior councillors if the plans are approved.

Council leader, currently County Coun Jennifer Mein, will receive a special responsibility allowance of £29,590, compared to £28,953 last year. The deputy leader will receive £20,713 (currently £20,267).

Six members of the cabinet will receive £16,274, compared to £15,924 currently. Five lead members, with special portfolios of responsibility, will receive £8,137, while the chairmen of various committees on the authority will receive between £2,959 and £8,877.

A report to councillors say the allowances have been “uprated in accordance with employee pay settlement of 2.2 per cent.”

The proposals also set out how much councillors can claim for travel in their own vehicles on council business.

Councillors in cars and vans can claim 45p per mile up to 10,000 miles and 25p per mile after that.

The issue will be debated at County Hall, Preston, from 1.30pm on Thursday.
