An American company has created six jobs in Fleetwood after setting up its overseas operation in the town.
Health Edco and Childbirth Graphics staged a grand opening ceremony when it officially opened a warehouse/office on Maritime Street.
It wasn’t really an ideal arrangement so when we needed to expand our premises, it made sense to bring it all up here and Fleetwood had the site we needed
Fleetwood is now the hub of all the company’s business outside North America and the site includes the administration side and the distribution of American-made products.
The enterprise, whose home base is in Waco, Texas, specialises in manufacturing and distributing health educational aids for clients such as schools, nurseries, police and fire services and, in Britain, the NHS and even football clubs.
Products include classroom play food kits, special simulation spectacles and more ambitious models showing fat in the body which are used to help educators get key health messages across.
Fleetwood was chosen for Health Edco’s overseas base because the company’s international director is Paul Wright, a former Cardinal Allen RC High School pupil who previously ran operations from his home in Thornton.
Mr Wright, 40, said: “I’ve been with the company 12 years and was running things from my home, but our main operational base was in Pulborough, West Sussex.
“It wasn’t really an ideal arrangement so when we needed to expand our premises, it made sense to bring it all up here and Fleetwood had the site we needed.
“We have many strands - a whole section dedicated to childbirth, and a health bus which travels around the country testing people’s blood pressure.”
Mr Wright said the company’s international operations - the trading block now based in Fleetwood - generated up to £3m worth of business each year.
