The flag, featuring a globe logo, will be hoisted at 10am on March 10 as one of 500 to be flown across the UK to celebrate the values of the Commonwealth and the opportunities offered to its citizens around the world.

Coun Linda Nulty, Fylde mayor, said: “The flag-raising is a new venture to celebrate the values of the Commonwealth – and I invite members of the public to attend the local ceremony at the town hall flagpole.

“Commonwealth values include democracy, respect for the rule of law, the integrity of the individual and the honouring of common law and Magna Carta which are both Britain’s gift to the world. Common law forms the basis of individual freedom which, sadly, is too often denied to citizens in many parts of the world.

“We sometimes take these values for granted and that is a mistake. I hope that flying the flag will prompt us to think seriously of what matters to us as a society and to resolve to keep our common values secure for the future.”

Coun Nulty will read out the Commonwealth’s new Commonwealth Affirmation before the flag is hoisted.
