Sewing classes took place at Claremont First Step Community Centre, where people learnt how to make something from scratch, do minor adjustments, or how to do alterations.

Tutor Michelle Oakes gave tutorials to the course members who made cushion covers, draft excluders and curtains.

The classes, part of Blackpool Council’s adult learning programme, ran on Thursday mornings and it’s planned for them to make a return next year.

Cathy Adams, from the centre on Dickson Road, said: “The residents on the course really enjoyed it.

“Anyone was invited –from beginners to those who wanted some sewing tips to help them finish something off.”

The course was free.

Cathy added: “People can buy clothes so cheaply nowadays – they can buy tops for a couple of pounds so then they don’t bother sewing them if they need fixing.

“It’s nice to run these courses to give people the chance to learn how to sew or brush up on their skills.

“People made curtains and covers for vanity units.

“They looked lovely.

“The course will be put on again next year.”

There are a variety of activities held at the community centre including a luncheon club, quizzes and trips out.

The centre is always on the look out for volunteers, so if you have a few hours spare, get in touch with Cathy Adams on the number below.
