STAFF from Blackpool’s hospitals were honoured by a cancer charity.

The Swallows head and neck cancer support group held its first awards evening and gave several awards to members of staff from the trust.

Consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon, Mr Ajay Nigam, received a lifetime achievement award for his work with local cancer patients, while clinical nurse specialist, Joanne Ashton, was also given an award for her work with local patients.

Mr Nigam said: “I was honoured and pleasantly surprised to receive the award for work in head and neck cancer. The service we provide to patients is delivered by a team of professionals who are dedicated and enthusiastic. We are lucky to have in Swallows a well-organised and knowledgeable support group, who managed to raise a phenomenal amount of funds in just one night and provide an entertaining evening.”

More than 300 people attended the evening, with guests including Premier League referee Mark Halsey. The event raised more than £18,000.
