Crews have been at the Reform Energy premises in Jameson Road since Saturday evening.

The plan, up to now, had been to let the fire, in bales of plastic, burn with efforts concentrated on stopping the flames from spreading.

Following a meeting this morning the strategy on site has now been changed.

Talks were held between senior Fire and Rescue personnel, Wyre Council representatives, the site owner, site operator, Environment Agency representatives and Police.

It was agreed it is now appropriate to begin using water on the fire.

This strategy had previously been considered to have potentially serious environmental impact.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: The fire has now reached a point where it is appropriate to spray water on it, this will suppress the smoke and airborne ash.

“Firefighters will be at the scene all day and the situation will be reviewed at 5pm.”

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

A 16-year-old man has been bailed.
