The work at the Eden Avenue premises, largely funded by housing provider Regenda, involved the ground floor being developed around a larger, open plan design which has made it more adaptable for events and activities.

Shaun MacNeill, vice chairman of West View Community Association, says the work has been a vast improvement.

Speaking at the centre’s official re-launch on Monday, he said: “PHX – a training company linked to Learn Direct is now using the centre as a training hub for English and maths.

“Many of those taking part have been referred by the Job Centre – so instead of having to travel into the PHX main facility in Blackpool they can use a local base.

“We are pleased to see so many people keen to learn and update their skills but the message needs to get out loud and clear to young people at school that to get jobs nowadays, employers are asking for a level C or equivalent in Maths and English – at the very least.”

The computers are also getting well used by local people looking for jobs, checking benefits and housing.

Mr MacNeill added: “As Online Universal Credit affects more residents our fast broadband and free unlimited computer use can be the first port of call for those without internet access.

“As well as these more formal sessions the centre hosts the Credit Union, Women’s Aid, Red Rose Recovery, knitting, snooker tuition , bingo, the Dream Scheme and psychic evenings.”

Looking ahead, now that the ground floor refurbishment is complete the team are going to open up the first floor to provide a large open plan room with our new kitchen.

Christopher Standish, Regenda Homes’ Regeneration Manager, said:“We know how important it is to support residents in whatever way we can. The impact the West View Community Association has had in Fleetwood is impressive. We are putting them at the heart of our vision to regenerate the town.”
