At weekends, pharmacy assistant Jemma Kerr likes nothing better than modelling as a grid girl and taking part in beauty contests.
Well, that’s not strictly true!
The 21-year-old, from Thornton, equally enjoys getting covered in grease and motor oil and driving an old banger, getting bashed into by other cars!
Jemma – who was crowned Miss Racing Babe 2012 – has been taking part in oval track racing since her early teens, as both her dad and brother took part in the sport.
She said: “I’ve been into it since I was really young, I started off racing in the under 16s and really enjoyed it, so carried on and now I race with the men.
“You can race with the ladies and I do sometimes, but they are a bit more timid and a bit tamer, so I prefer to race with the boys.
“I love a bit of cheeky competition.
“You get such a buzz when you’re racing and the adrenalin kicks in.
“Touch wood, I’ve never really had any injuries from it, just scraped my knees where my legs have hit the steering wheel.
“It doesn’t scare me, I feel nervous just before the race starts, but then you get that adrenalin rush.
“I won two races last week and it’s such a great feeling.”
Jemma has been able to combine her love of racing with her love of modelling and doing promotional work and last year won the title of Miss Racing Babe 2012.
She said: “It was my first competition, so I felt really proud and pleased to win.
“I’m a grid girl for the sport’s biggest oval racing promotion Speedworth.
“I like the contrast and the fact I get all glammed up and girlie, but also get covered in oil and mud and race cars.
“It’s a bit like beauty and the beast.”
Jemma, who is with the Kerri Parker Modelling Academy, will be taking part in the grand final of the 2013 Bikini Squad contest in Norwich later this month.
There will be 50 girls competing and 12 winners will be picked to fly out to Hollywood in September and compete against 12 American winners for a prize including red carpet appearances, interviews with TV networks and shooting an official calendar.
