The 2015-plate red Vauxhall Insignia was parked on the beach close to Starr Gate when it was swamped by the Irish Sea shortly before 1am, the coastguard said.

A spokesman said: “The car got stuck in the sand and two people were trying to recover it.”

The pair were unharmed.

The pair, who watched on yesterday as the car was placed on a recovery truck at low-tide and taken away, declined to comment when approached by The Gazette.

The Vauxhall is now believed to be a write-off, according to Coastguards, after spending hours submerged in the salty sea water.
