Police and a recovery vehicle can be seen removing the damaged black Audi from the scene.

Speculation is rife about what happened.

One theory is that the owner left the handbrake off, and the vehicle crashed through a railing before falling onto Lower Walk below.

The incident happened at around 11am not far from the Metropole Hotel at North Shore on an otherwise deserted seafront.

One onlooker said he had heard that the handbrake has been left off and the car had rolled over the prom and tram tracks before crashing through a cast iron fence.

It is not thought anyone was hurt.

Commentators on social media suggested the car had been parked in the Cocker Street area.

It is believed it was unoccupied.

One eye witness said the owner was at the scene when the car was being removed.
