The annual quote for comprehensive car insurance is £594.86 compared to £659.53 in 2012, according to the AA.

The boost for motorists is a result of an investigation into fraud, which had previously led to an increase in premiums between 2009 and 2011.

Terry Godbert, chairman of Blackpool and Fylde Advanced Motorists, said: “It’s encouraging because they are clamping down on fraudulent claims, which is a good thing.

People are being caught making these claims and it’s helping honest motorists reduce their costs.”

Young drivers are still being hit by extortionate quotes, with those aged between 17 and 22 paying an average of £1,210.

“I would get a pink card if I pass my test but I’d never be able to use it because cars are a never ending expense.”
