TAXI drivers are to undergo an extra series of checks to assure passengers are in safe hands.
Fylde Council’s public protection committee heard a driving licence loophole meant cabbies could carry on driving even if they had lost their driving licence.
It happens if a cab driver was to tell the DVLA they had lost their driving licence and asked for a new one.
If they were to accrue penalty points, or even a ban, they could present their first “lost” licence to the council which issues taxi permits.
While this has happened in the UK, there is nothing to suggest this has happened in Fylde, and councillors are keen to keep it that way.
Coun Cheryl Little, cabinet member for social wellbeing, said: “Fylde Council has a duty of care to ensure every cab licence holder has a valid driving licence. If they haven’t they are driving illegally.”
